One word- Unmissable.
The preceding three seasons of Sherlock set up the bar really high for the fourth season, accelerated by the fact that it took almost two years to shoot this episode, and the unexpected arrival of Moriarty at the end of the last episode, and the fact that the writers have confirmed this to be the final season.
This episode was much different from the preceding episodes of Sherlock, mainly due to the fact that this episode was much darker and deeper than the earlier episodes. Here is what I thought of this episode (spoilers ahead):
- Excellent cinematography: The locations, the camera angle, the position of the floating text, the music and the lighting were excellent, and gave a feel of the lurking darkness. The allusion to Samarra, the blue theme was quite good.
- Boring storytelling: Although this was one of the best and deepest episodes of Sherlock, the plot was discontinuous. For the first part of the episode, the plot wasn't even fully described. The writers tried to cover many bases at once, but clearly failed in the initial parts of the episode, though the ending is quite gripping.
- Deeper story arc: The writers have done a commendable job in drawing a deep story arc within the first episode itself. The mysterious (un)appearance of Moriarty, the unknown lady at the bus stand, allusion to the third brother Sherrinford were unexpected, but highly interesting elements.
- The dark theme: The dark theme was the best part of the episode. The monologues of Benedict/Sherlock, the references to Samarra gave a feel for the looming darkness.
- Unexpected plot twists: Death of Mary, resurfacing of A.G.R.A, unappearance of Moriarty, character defects of John and the ultimate betrayal (possibly) of John were unexpected plot twists. The post credit scene has made me anticipate much more than ever.
Overall, the episode was awesome. Although minor plot holes do exist, but the episode has made us anticipate for the next episode much more than ever, thus fulfilled its purpose.
